Should You Trust Grey Market Premium (GMP)?

Grey Market Premium (GMP) is highly sought after by retail traders seeking quick listing gains. However, professional financial analysts advise caution. GMP should never be used as the sole metric for determining whether to apply for an IPO. While it can offer a snapshot of market demand, it carries substantial risks and limitations.

Why GMP Can Be Deceptive

1. Lack of Regulation: The grey market is unregulated. Speculators and brokers can easily manipulate GMP figures through artificial bidding or self-dealing to create a false sense of demand.
2. High Volatility: A GMP that is ₹200 today can drop to ₹0 on listing day if market conditions turn bearish or if negative global news arrives.
3. Speculative Nature: GMP does not represent the fundamentals of the company. It ignores balance sheet metrics, profitability trends, objects of the issue, and valuation ratios like PE Ratio and ROE.

Investors should focus their analysis on the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP), financial statements, and business models. GMP is a secondary indicator and should only be used to gauge short-term sentiment, not long-term value.
